As I am sure many of you have heard by now, yesterday on December 14th some time in the morning, there was a horrific school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, with 26 victims dead and countless friends and family grieving. I cannot begin to put into words how heavy this news and the news of 4 other tragedies sits on my heart. It is a terrible thing to lose anyone at any age, but for a parent to lose a child must simply be heart-breakingly devastating, especially with Christmas just around the corner. I can’t imagine the suffering that the community is going through in the wake of this awful mark on their history. We here at the blog wanted to take a moment and extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims in this week’s tragedies, so close to Christmas time. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been wondering what I could possibly do to help even in a small way. Here are two things that I’ve found.

1. You can send donations and cards/letters of sympathy to the community of Sandy Hook at the following address:
Sandy Hook Elementary School
12 Dickenson Drive
Sandy Hook, CT 06482

2. There is a candle company called CLARO that has created a special candle in light of the tragedy. All of the proceeds are going directly to emergency support for any healthcare costs, missed work, funeral costs, or any other needs that the families may have. Unfortunately, they don’t ship outside of the US right now, but you can still order them. You can either have them sent to the school or to someone you know who lives in the states that could send it on to you.

Lastly, I wanted to share with you something I found quite interesting. It’s a quote that was said to be from the very wise Morgan Freeman. Despite being a hoax, it’s a great message.

You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here’s why.

It’s because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed

people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he’ll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN’s article says that if the body count “holds up”, this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer’s face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer’s identity? None that I’ve seen yet. Because they don’t sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you’ve just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man’s name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news. -Via The Examiner
